Technical inspection and control

Equipment – safe and high quality

All parts of the equipment must be able to withstand high loads, be free of protruding, sharp elements and be arranged in such a way as to avoid any risk of entrapment of the child’s body or body part.

Playgrounds or facilities must meet the requirements of the Lithuanian standards

To ensure children’s health safety, a playground or play area must be assessed for compliance with the requirements of the Lithuanian standards before it is used. The inspection shall be carried out by an accredited inspection body for compliance with the Lithuanian Standard. A list of accredited bodies can be found on the website of the National Accreditation Bureau http://db.nab.lt/ais/accreditation. The operator or owner of the playground receives an inspection report or certificate at the time of the inspection, and the safe play equipment is marked with a special sticker with the date of the next inspection.

To maintain a safe play environment at all times, it is important to carry out maintenance and inspection of playgrounds, indoor equipment, including ancillary equipment (fencing, gates, etc.) and surfaces. Therefore, the operator or owner of playgrounds and facilities must:

  • at least once a week, assess the risks arising from the use of the equipment, vandalism (broken or missing parts, other obvious hazards);
  • at least once every 3 months (unless otherwise specified by the equipment manufacturer in the maintenance instructions), assess the performance and stability of the equipment, wear and tear (especially of moving parts) and structural integrity;
  • Ensure that playgrounds and indoor play areas undergo a basic annual inspection once a year to assess the compliance of their equipment and surfaces with the requirements of the Lithuanian standards.

Always a safe and well-maintained play environment

Those responsible for playgrounds and indoor facilities must ensure that the play environment for children is always safe and well maintained. If any defects are found during the assessment that could endanger human health, they must be rectified immediately or the equipment must be kept out of use, thereby protecting children from injury and damage.
