Your Responsibility

As a food handler you are legally required to do everything you can to keep food safe at all times. This means you must: Have good personal hygiene, Wear suitable clean protective clothing Keep your workplace clean and tidy, Do everything possible to protect food from contamination Keep food at safe temperatures And you are also legally required to tell your employer if YOU have had any symptoms of food poisoning or another illness that could potentially contaminate food. The truth is, your body is the perfect temperature for bacteria to make themselves at home and multiply. So if you are unwell you are one of the biggest risks to someone else’s health and safety. For example, a person touches their face 2000 to 3000 times a day – which is 2 to 5 times a minute! If this seems a little crazy to you, see where your hands are right now. Imagine if you were unwell, and those hands were touching salads, spoons and sandwiches. So on that note, next up in Section 2 – we’re focusing on personal hygiene.
